eyes lips face

its no joke that i love makeup. i love to try new brands and new shades and new products but i do have a few tried and true favorites that i absolutely cannot live without. that being said, i travel a lot because i’m in school and home is 800+ miles away. the past few times i’ve flown, my nars products have completely cracked and even the rubbing alcohol trick couldn’t bring them back to life. it broke my heart to drop a $40 dollar palette into the trashcan.

today on pinterest i found a master list of duplicate products and i’m reaching out to you guys for help. have you tried any of these dupes? please comment and let me know how you feel about them! spending the $3 dollars at target seems like an absolute no brainer but i would love to get some opinions as well!

these are some of the top products i found on pinterest and i want to hear from you! have you tried these? what’s your take on the dupe situation? here’s hoping i can ditch some of my regular products to save the frustration of a broken foundation and also keep some money in my pocket!! let me know what you think!

a pretty little salad

has this chilly weather made anyone else feel sluggish and lazy lately? i know that i’m definitely guilty of being less productive in cold weather and i tend to cook less too. i’ve been eating pasta and butter for the past few nights which i usually never do. i decided to make this salad on a whim today and it turned out so amazing i thought i would share it with you all! nothing like a good salad to get you back on track!

Image

  • arugula
  • strawberries
  • half of an orange
  • quarter of a pomegranate
  • mini cucumber
  • pepitas (mine were roasted)

just combine all into one big bowl and enjoy! i didn’t toss mine with anything because i like when the citrus fruit makes its own sort of dressing but i assume that some balsamic vinegar or lime juice would pair wonderfully with this.

also a tip on how to actually get the seeds out of a pomegranate!! cut off the top and the bottom pieces and set aside. cut into quarters where the natural white part of the pomegranate divides the little sections of seeds. working with one quarter at a time, place into a bowl with water and pull back on the skin like you’re cracking it. this frees the seeds and also avoids the juice from squirting everywhere!! the seeds will sink to the bottom and the white part will float along the top. skim out the white part and toss, then drain the seeds into a strainer. easy!

netflix documentaries

i cannot count the amount of people talking about netflix documentaries on my two hands. from my friends to my professors, i feel like everyone is watching them. as curious as i am, i’ll admit that i’m actually a little bit afraid. the food ones peak my interest the most but i’m so afraid to watch them because i like meat. regardless, i’ve been more and more apt to cozying up on my couch on friday and saturday nights because it is just so cold outside and leaving my leggings, candles, and blankets is just way too much effort. i’m excited to dive in this weekend, here are the top five that i’m most excited to watch!

hungry for change

[an expose of the secrets that diet, weight loss, and food industries use to keep consumers coming back for more.]

food matters

park avenue: money, power, and the american dream

god save my shoes

[a revealing documentary of the relationship between women and their shoes.]

i’m secretly glad that food, inc. is no longer available for streaming because if it was i know that i would be watching that first and swearing off meat for the next few weeks. if you have any suggestions for documentaries you love and would not miss, let me know in the comments! i am always up for suggestions!

holiday arrival roundup

here’s a little secret – i spent at least 45 minutes last week signing up to receive holiday catalogs from all of my favorite stores. i can’t help it, i’m officially in the holiday mood and what’s more exciting than coming home to get a catalog out of my mailbox everyday for the next month? ever since i was little i can remember pouring through the glossy pages and circling my favorite items. now it’s a lot easier to just skip the catalogs and go right to the email gift guides – but they aren’t as fun. go sign up to get them delivered to your mailbox, who doesn’t love getting mail?

here’s a roundup of some of my favorite holiday items so far:

happy halloween!

confession: i actually am not a fan of halloween. i’ve hated scary movies for as long as i can remember so the spook appeal is not for me. what i do love about halloween is the candy and the fact that you can eat it all day long and not feel bad. so tonight while i’m finishing crafting together my costume, i will be blissfully eating candy corn, baking pumpkin muffins, and roasting pumpkin seeds. and for breakfast? i had a salted caramel cake pop. best decision of the day so far.

this year for halloween i’m channeling my inner audrey hepburn/blair waldorf and am going as holly golightly! i am so excited for my costume because it is so me. here’s a sneak peak!

home

there is something to be said about the place that i call home. boston is and always will be that place. i’ve spent the past three years away and nothing feels closer to my heart than when i’m by the ocean, driving down roads that don’t make sense, or drinking a medium iced regular from dunks. but there’s something to be said for the people of this city and only a few choice words come to mind.

strength.

resilience.

passion.

sometimes it takes a grand gesture to heal an old wound. it takes something bigger than yourself, a hero of sorts, something that can unite an entire place for a greater good.

i was eleven when the red sox played the cardinals for the world series title in 2004. i will never forget lying on my living room floor with my family, trying desperately to stay awake for the end of the game to watch the beloved red sox break the curse. and they did. and the entire state of massachusetts was absolute mayhem.

this year’s win? i have that same feeling. it feels better.

nothing could have prepared me for the way i felt the first time i went back to boston after what happened in april. it was heartbreaking and eye-opening all at the same time. the first bruins game following the marathon made me sob, david ortiz made the city smile, and this win has taken the shattered pieces and glued them back together.

“they’ll break your heart.” that line from fever pitch says it best and as long as i can remember, my parents have been telling me not to get attached to our teams because they literally get you so close to winning you can taste it, and they let you down. but isn’t that what makes it special? falling so hard for something and having it let you down only to bring you right back up and maybe win, if you’re lucky.

today i’m twenty. and the red sox and their tendency to break your heart? it’s taught me a few things about life. but i think the most important lesson we can take away from it is that yes, it is going to let you down, and yes, life is going to throw you some curveballs and downright break your heart at times, but in your darkest moment and that weakest hour, it’s going to give you something to lift you right back up and tell you to keep on moving forward because greater things are coming your way.

i have never been prouder of where i come from. i love and embrace the new england lifestyle i was brought up on and have never met another person from outside new england that quite understands what i mean when i say that. this city has taught me when to open up and when to back away, but most importantly it has taught me to wear my heart on my sleeve and go confidently after my goals and dreams and for that, i will always be grateful.

not to mention the fact that i will always have a place in my heart for that dirty water.
